Bring It On!
The first show of the season for the Denver Performing Arts Center was Bring It On. Irv and I are subscribers and this year a co-worker, Kim, bought a seat with us.
Irv is working this weekend so he gave up his ticket to Debbie, another co-worker of mine. Quite frankly, I think Irv was glad he was working so he didn't have to go. He's okay if it's a "manly" type of show like Jersey Boys, but I don't think he enjoys many of the shows I've dragged him to (although he's always willing to go with me and not complain too much).
Anyway, Kim, Debbie, and I made a day of it. If you go to the matinee performance you have to have lunch beforehand. It's an unwritten rule.
We chose to go to a Mongolian BBQ place, BDs. It's one of my favorite restaurants in downtown Denver and I was thrilled when Kim said she wanted to go there. (We're going to take turns picking our lunch spots and yesterday was Kim's turn.)
I love to pick my favorite things at BDs--a little chicken, beef, calamari, shrimp, pork, sausage and a few veggies plus a combination of sweet sauces and teriyaki. Then you get to watch it being cooked. The chefs are always a lot of fun.
Yum! The finished product. (Why does it always look like more on the plate than it does in the bowl?) Notice another of my favorite things--a Blue Moon beer with an orange wedge.
After lunch we took a nice leisurely stroll down the 16th Street Mall to the Performing Arts Center. It's a beautiful complex that contains a variety of theatres.
It was a beautiful day! Maybe 60 degrees or so and sunny. Is this really January in Colorado?
I have to admit that I wasn't real excited about seeing Bring It On. As the mother of three daughters I have seen the movie way more times than the average person. Yes, it's a fun movie, but is it really Broadway show material?
Well, I have to say it's now one of my favorite shows. They had dancers, real cheerleaders, and very talented singers--some of them were all three--dancing, singing, cheerleaders and they were all very athletic. Some of those girls were flipped into the rafters of the stage, it was very impressive. Most of all though, it was just a good show. I give it 4.5 stars out of 5. (Sorry, I have to reserve 5 stars for shows such as Phantom of the Opera, Jersey Boys, Wicked, and Mama Mia).
Would Irv have enjoyed it? No, probably not. It is definitely a "girl" show.
It was a fun day with two great ladies.
Our next show is Wicked in April which I've seen numerous times including on Broadway, and I can't wait to see it again.
