Skywatch Friday: Wild Horses!

The Salt River wild horses have been eluding us since we arrived in Arizona several weeks ago so today we went in search of them again.

This time we started at the Coon Bluff Recreation Area.  First we went one way down the river, but soon had to turn back because we didn't bring any rock climbing gear.

Then we turned around and went the other direction.

The water in the river was crystal clear, but no sign of fish or horses.

There are times when I really miss my dad especially when I want to know what kind of tree I'm looking at.  This one has something that resembles Spanish moss hanging down.  What is it?

This riparian area that surrounds the river has all kinds of wildlife.  Today we saw theses white egrets.

This gray heron was also hanging out in the distance.

We met a guy carrying all kinds of photographic equipment and he said we needed to go about a quarter of a mile further down the river to find a spot where the horses cross every afternoon around 5:00.

We continued on down the river to an area with a really rocky shore.  On the opposite side was a clearing where the horses should appear.  We found a couple rocks to sit on and just waited and waited.

An then they appeared!

A small herd...maybe about five or six.  They waded right in to get a big drink.

And then something spooked them and they were gone just like that.  I'm so thankful I had my telephoto lens on so I could catch these three photos.  The sun was about to set by this time so we had to start the hike out before darkness arrived.

It was awesome!  I'll definitely be back.

wow! Finally, you encountered wild horses!
What a nice adventure! All these photos are amazing.
I'm really pleased you were rewarded for all your effort and patience. Beautiful photos! That certainly does look like Spanish moss in the tree. A parasite of some kind??
Greetings and Salutations! I am so glad that you finally saw the wild horses. Lucky you ran into the person with all the photographic gear who told you where and when to show up for this wonderful sight you provided us to see from a far which I am grateful for. I too miss my dad for this same reason among many other reasons. Dad knew trees. I however, know only a few by name.
