Who am I?

For Christmas Mary got me an Ancestry.com DNA kit.  Irv also got one.  We filled up the tubes with our spit and mailed them in for processing.

On Friday, I was surprised when I received an email saying my results were in.  Surprised, excited, and a little curious to see what the results were.

I expected Irish and Danish.

Here's what I got.

59% British
Only 15% Scandinavian
Only 13% Irish
6% Eastern European
3% Western European
2% Iberian Peninsula
1% Caucasus

What the heck?  I was in a bit of shock.

59% British?  Can this mean Northern Ireland?  Although my family were Irish Catholics.  Grandparents on both sides were of Danish descent so why only 15% Scandinavian?

Details on the Eastern European showed Russian.  And where the heck is Caucasus?  Now I know it's the Iraq, Iran, Syria, Turkey region.

What about the Spanish??  I couldn't figure out where that came from, but my dad just gave me a history lesson the Spanish Armada that washed ashore in western Ireland way back when.  I looked it up and it happened in 1588.  Apparently some of those sailors became part of the culture of western Ireland and the resulting descendants are known as the black Irish because of their darker skin, hair, and eyes.  Could I have a forefather who was part of a Spanish Armada?

It's all so interesting.  I definitely have an interest in learning more about my ancestry.  I've always told people I was of Irish and Danish descent.  Do I have to now say I'm British?  I have nothing against being British--maybe I'm from Scotland.  I would love to be of Scottish descent.  Maybe that explains my love of the bagpipes.

It also matched me with two of my cousins who had also had their tests done previously.  They had no way of knowing they were my cousins so I have to believe the test is authentic.  It also gave me a list of about 75 3rd and 4th cousins--people I have never heard of .

It's all so interesting.  One of the best gifts ever!

Well, I'm not telling anybody about being only an 8th Irish if you don't.

Wasn't Merri Ann's test results similar?
