Yellowstone Adventure: Too much work and not enough play
Only 1 1/2 more days until I finally get a day off! It's been a long stretch of 10 days of very long shifts--some start at 6:55 a.m. and some go until 10:30 at night. I'm not used to this shift work and I'm not real sure I like it.
One thing I know for sure is that I used to get more exercise in before I arrived in Yellowstone. I'm normally on my feet for 8 hours straight here, but that doesn't translate to very many steps. I'm trying not to be obsessed about getting my 10K steps per day, but it's hard.
When I have a shift that starts late in the morning or early in the afternoon I try to walk down to the marina and back.
This shot is from the opposite end of the campground from where I live. The Yellowstone Forever, Delaware North, and construction crews life at this end. I'm trying to get a job with Yellowstone Forever, but right now they don't have any openings.
I always end at the helipad which overlooks the lake. I love this spot! The helicopter has made a few trips in in the last couple weeks, two today. So far there hasn't been a good outcome when the helicopter visits our helipad.
In preparation for Wednesday, my day off, I'm at the dorm today doing my laundry, updating my blog, and picking up a couple packages from Amazon. Yes, Amazon delivers to the wilderness! The dorm used to be a nice, quiet place to get some work done on the computer. Now, all "the kids" are getting to know each other so they're kind of rowdy. That's okay though because all of them are very polite to the more major crew.
On Wednesday I need to make a trip to Cody to restock the groceries and some other stuff. On the way back I hope to stop in Hayden Valley for a quick hike. I'm here to hike and to get to know the park's secrets. With my rough work schedule I haven't had much opportunity to do that. I told my boss that if this is what my entire summer looks like, I'll be heading back to Colorado. She promises that starting next week we'll get two consecutive days off as long as we're willing to work even longer shifts. I hope that's true because it would be very disappointing to end the Yellowstone Adventure so soon.
Have a good week!

The employee campground is in a remote area of Grant Village that the average tourist won't just stumble on. There's not a whole lot of us up there so it's quite deserted in the morning. For the first couple weeks I didn't feel it was safe to walk down this road by myself.
This can of bear spray goes everywhere with me now. I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Although I haven't seen a bear in a couple weeks, I assume they're still everywhere. I keep my eyes peeled and I sing to myself while I'm walking.
