Isn't it the middle of May?
I learned a lesson about not checking the weather forecast before heading out to a 5K this past weekend. It's the middle of May, the weather should be nice wouldn't you think? I did manage to throw my running gloves in the car because when I went out to feed the horses that morning I noticed a chill in the air.
On the drive to the zoo I noticed my car was displaying the cold outside temperature warning which comes on when it's below 37 degrees.
Then it was time to stand in line to pick up the race packets. I am talking cold. Bone chilling cold combined with drizzle and wind. I had planned to shed my outermost layer, but instead I put on the race t-shirt and left all my layers on. Why did I choose capri length running pants instead of long pants? Shiloh had planned to run in shorts and a tank top. At least I was a little better prepared than he was.
There were lots of people to huddle with at the start line.
This is the spot where you usually get the best view of the city. This year, however, it was the view of the inside of a cloud. This is me breathing. This race has a 1,000 foot rise in elevation. It's tough, I think I hated every minute of it.
The best part of a long uphill is that it's followed by a long downhill. I ran the whole way down. Yes, the cold is a motivator. The best part of being the slowest member of the group is that someone is there to take a picture at the finish line.
My brothers always post that they are the first or second in their age group. I was 18th in my age group which is great because the week before I was 136th in my age group. We have large age groups in Colorado even for the 55-59 year olds.
For the first time ever we made it down off the mountain in time to enjoy the french toast breakfast provided by Kneaders. That has never happened before and it was fantastic!
The bad part of this race is that I aggravated the slipped disc in my lower back. It's painful and there's no way to alleviate the pain. Sleeping is impossible because there's no way to get comfortable. I stayed home from work yesterday, but I'm trying to get through it today. Why, you ask? Because I am a dedicated, loyal employee who feels guilty about staying home.
Remind me next year that I'm never doing the Run to the Shrine again.

I thought I was cold on Saturday but it was nothing like you had. We were in the low 50's but I added the race shirt to my other shirt and I still froze.
Between that and freezing in the rain while waiting in line for the shuttle from the electric powered plane I am under the weather a little bit.
Take care Sis, and I love you.
