Skywatch Friday: In the fields
We got the call early one morning last week. It was time to bale the hay. When we get the call, we go. We both left work early and headed to the hay fields. Owning horses is an expensive hobby. We save a few bucks per bale by collecting it out of the hay fields ourselves and we have to do it the day it's baled before there's a chance that it might be rained on.
The first row on the trailer isn't too difficult, the second row goes on okay too.
Irv does all the throwing by the third row because I'm just not strong enough to lift them that high...they weigh about 75 lbs. So my job is to arrange the rows after Irv throws them on.
We don't have a picture of it, but I was up there on top until we got all 90 bales loaded. Pretty impressive don't you think? In case you didn't know it, I'm not a sissy girl! 10 more bales in the back of the truck and we've reached our maximum capacity of 100. (Irv went by himself today to get the second load...quite the good guy don't you agree?)
Robert was busy raking the hay while we were loading. Robert and Barb started out as customers and now I consider them friends. They are hard working, top notch people...if I could hand pick a second set of parents it would be them. How they keep going at their age just amazes me. We get our hay from them every year. We keep an eye on the cattle that they pasture near our house. When they escape through the fence we get them back into the pasture...one day I even did it in a skirt and heels. (See, more evidence that I'm not a sissy girl.)
Farmers and ranchers are the hardest working people I know and I'm so proud to work in agriculture. (Yes, keeping the computers running at the financial institution that serves America's ranchers and farmers does qualify me as working in agriculture.)
I so admire these hard working Americans. Have you thanked a farmer or rancher lately?
Happy Skywatch Friday!
