Keeping the prairie alive

Out here on the prairie there are no trees unless you plant them.  We've planted a number of trees over the years and the biggest and my favorite was a weeping willow.

This last winter killed it.

We've been hoping and hoping that it would miraculously come back to life, but it was not to be so today it had to come down.

It's times like this when Irv probably wishes he owned a chainsaw.

When it got to this stage I suggested that Irv carve it into one of those log bears.  Great idea, I thought.

You can't loose a tree without planting a new one and we were lucky enough to find a birch tree at Lowe's.  Birch trees seem to do the best on the high prairie along with some pine trees that we've had for years.

We now have someone to watch over the trees.  I don't know what his name is yet...I need to get some suggestions from my brother.  Our cousin had one of these up in South Dakota and I found one for my brother last year and he had all kinds of clever names for his.  I'm so glad to finally have one of my own now...a wonderful mother's day gift from Mary.  Isn't he adorable?  I hope he doesn't scare small children away.

Our pine trees have finally matured and we have pinecones for the first time ever!  Now we need to import some squirrels.  Maybe not...the baby bunny killer would probably enjoy squirrels too.

A busy day trying to keep things alive out here on the prairie.  We really do have the best yard on the block...never mind that we are the only place that has an actual front and back yard.

It's great that you are planting trees. I like that you put something on the trees to watch over them, that's creative. I planted some trees with my husband a few years ago for our fifth year anniversary. I am happy that one of them survived. I wish all three would have grown, they were all fruit trees. Your pinecones looks great and glad to hear your pine trees have matured. great progress I think :-)
