Veggie Patch Update

Summer is now 2/3rd over and I haven't posted anything about my veggie patch.  Well, what can I say?  It's August and we've yet to have any typical summer weather.  It's been cold, rainy, and overcast plus we've had a lot of hail.  Only a handful of "warm" days.

My yard has loved this weather except for the willow on the far right.  It took a hard hit with a hail storm during the first part of summer and has never recovered.  We now look like we have this massive front yard with luscious green grass.

Same for the backyard which goes all the way out to the barn.  Of course what I'm not showing you are the weeds that are about to overtake us.  They too have loved the cool, wet weather.

One of my whiskey barrels has done quite well while the flowers in the other drowned because of too much water.

These bushes by my driveway are thriving.  I wish I knew what they are because I love them!  Anyone know?

All the lilies I have planted along the front walkway are huge, but not many blooms yet.  They'll be gorgeous when and if they ever flower.  It has taken us 10 years to get that line of shrubs doing as well as they are.

These is one of the new red yuccas that Irv brought me from Albuquerque.  I don't know if they'll survive here, but I'm going to give it a try.  Hopefully my sweetie will have time to plant them in a day or two.  He has a lot going on right now so I won't bug him too much.

I have these kitten whose sole purpose in life is to escape the house.  I chased her around for quite a while this evening when she unexpectedly escaped when I was coming in from taking these pictures.  Bad kitten!

Lastly, here's my veggie patch.  Kind of pathetic this year.  The young plants were beaten down by hail repeatedly at the start of summer.  The lettuce has done fantastic.  Cucumbers...probably not going to happen by the first freeze.  Tomatoes are still small and green.  Beans and peas have done great.  Of course the zucchini is growing like weeds.  I had one rogue carrot that I ate for lunch today.

Don't you love how my garden looks all neat and tidy?  I love neat and tidy!

We harvested the first zucchinis last night and Irv will be happy to know that there will be the first zucchini bread waiting for him when he gets home in the morning.  I tried a new high altitude zucchini bread recipe so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that these loaves won't fall.  I have the worst luck with my zucchini bread falling.

Here's the real reason Irv is getting this treat so soon.  I dropped a dozen eggs while carrying in groceries this evening and I had to think of things I could bake real quick to use a few of them.

So that's my update.  How's your garden doing this year?

Nice, sorry about the hail and such. Heather is growing tomatoes in barrels and dog Abby has decided that she likes eating them right off the vine.
