My birthday week!

I've been quite bad at blogging lately.  You see I'm trying to learn to take it easy and not feel like I have to do so much.

Last week I had to say "no" to two things that make me incredibly happy.  I told the zoo I needed to take at least two months off from my volunteer job and I told a good friend that I couldn't come help with the 4-H horse show at the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo.  I'm all about volunteering and I've spent years building a reputation that makes people want to ask for my help.  To turn down a request was really a struggle, but one that I felt I needed to do at this time for my health.  A lot of people ask, and I prefer not to talk about it so if you ask me in person I'll tell you I'm feeling great, but no, I'm not feeling better.  In fact, I feel much worse than before I made the trip to Minnesota--I wish I had never gone.  Can't sleep, can't find a pain killer that helps, not comfortable laying down or sitting up, and don't feel like doing much of anything right now.  And that's all I'm going to say about that right now.

One thing I won't give up is the theatre.  On Saturday Irv and I went to the Denver Performing Arts Center to see Million Dollar Quartet.  There are two types of shows--the ones that you hate every minute of and can't wait to end, and the others that fly by and you wish would go on forever.  Million Dollar Quartet is the latter.  Loved it!  It's the story of a jam session in December 1956 with Elvis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis.  The music was fantastic and the story was touching.  I even teared up a little at the end when the narrator talked about the talent of these four guys and  how he wished they could have realized what they had and lived happier lives.  So true.  Anyway, this is the start of my birthday week so if anyone is looking for a gift to give me I'd love to have the soundtrack (just kidding...well, maybe I'm not kidding all that much).

The other thing I won't give up is my physical activity.  Boot camp three times a week and my Fitbit to keep me on track for 10K steps per day although there are some days that I will settle for 6 or 7 thousand steps.  My Fitbit went missing for a short time yesterday and I was about to be really bummed, but then I found it behind the couch.  Whew!  I have grown very attached to the thing.  Odd as it may seem, going to boot camp makes me feel better for a short time probably because Jesse, my trainer, works me so hard that I concentrate on breathing and forget about the pain for awhile.  He's got the touch of pushing me harder than anyone else can, but he also understands when I tell him that I have to take a break.  I won't ever say that I like boot camp, but for some reason I keep on going back.

On Saturday Mary, Jillian, and I are running a 5K and I have two goals.  1) Don't be last and 2) improve from my last time of 56 minutes.  This race is more "serious".  I think it's for real runners.  You only get an hour to finish and they don't allow dogs or strollers.  The last 5K was on a trail course with hills and rough terrain so I feel it's possible to do better on the city streets.  If I tell the full truth, I'm running in this race for the green beer and the St. Patrick's Day parade that will follow afterwards.

So, enjoy my birthday week!
