Skywatch Friday: Phelps Lake

I got to have a mini getaway last week during my days off.  We headed down to Jackson Hole for a few days.  While our daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter went for a horseback ride, my hubby and I headed out for a hike.  Our destination was Phelps Lake in the Tetons.


We parked an the trailhead and were immediately re-routed off the trail due to you know what...bear activity.  There are lots of berries in the area and the bears are enjoying eating them.  Instead of closing the trail they just did a large detour that added a little over a mile to the hike.


It was later in the afternoon so we pretty much had the place to ourselves.  There were some wildflowers still hanging on.


Compared to Yellowstone, the Grand Teton National Park had much better trail markers and facilities.  Yes, I am a little jealous.


The Russian Thistles are in perfect bloom.


There's that husband of mine always trying to break the rules.  This is the trail that was closed due to bear activity.


Before long we reached the lake.


This is one of my favorite lakes because of the reflection from the mountains and trees.


It was really smoky in the Tetons, but my photos came out okay.  We kept our eyes and focus to the left and didn't let them wander to the right.  Why, you may ask.  Because some guy thought where the trail came out at the lake was a good place to do some nude sunbathing.  Thank God Miss G wasn't with us or she would have been horrified.  


On the hike out we passed lots of mushrooms.  How do people know which ones are safe to eat?  I just avoid them all.


We made lots of noise and constantly said "hey bear".  Luckily we didn't see any critters, but we passed lots of bear scat.


As we were leaving the park we were treated to a special sight...a mama and baby moose enjoying their dinner.


Moose are very hard to find so this sighting made me a happy camper.


Can you even imagine a more perfect setting?  I love the Tetons.

Greetings and Salutations! That last photograph would be a great advertisement for tourist to head to the Tetons.

What a great post. I really enjoyed it. But I think I'll stay away from hiking Death Canyon. I don't like the sound of that!

Beautiful lake scenes. We here in tropics don't dare to break rules due to vast bio-diversity. We always tend to carry a guide with us!

We had a fire out here on the eastern plains of Colorado last week.  I kept getting reports on the fire's location on my cell phone while I was at work.  Then a warning popped up that let me know it was time to hit the road and go home to prepare to evacuate the critters. When we initially got home it was still a decent distance away. Within 30 minutes it had come up over the ridge and flames were visible. The winds were gusting 45 to 50 mph.  It was a fast moving fire that burned 5,000 acres in only four hours.  Then the most amazing thing happened--the winds died down and the firefighters got in under control by 8:15 that night.  Thank you, Lord! Skywatch Friday: Upper and Lower Falls

Yesterday I got to visit the recently completed Uncle Tom's Overlook along the Yellowstone River in Yellowstone National Park. This is the first really good look I've ever had at the Upper Falls of the Yellowstone River. These falls are almost as good as the Lower Falls. After leaving the Upper Falls you go downstream for a mile or so to.... ...Artist's Point which has the very best view of the Lower Falls (in my opinion).  In this location the view is perfect, so perfect that it look like a painting. This is just one of the features of this Park that make it my heart and soul.   Linking with Skywatch Friday

Skywatch Friday: Wild Horses!

 The Salt River wild horses have been eluding us since we arrived in Arizona several weeks ago so today we went in search of them again. This time we started at the Coon Bluff Recreation Area.  First we went one way down the river, but soon had to turn back because we didn't bring any rock climbing gear. Then we turned around and went the other direction. The water in the river was crystal clear, but no sign of fish or horses. There are times when I really miss my dad especially when I want to know what kind of tree I'm looking at.  This one has something that resembles Spanish moss hanging down.  What is it? This riparian area that surrounds the river has all kinds of wildlife.  Today we saw theses white egrets. This gray heron was also hanging out in the distance. We met a guy carrying all kinds of photographic equipment and he said we needed to go about a quarter of a mile further down the river to find a spot where the horses cross every afternoon around 5:0...
