Maiden Voyage
This past weekend we took the new fifth wheel out on its maiden voyage.
We decided to stay close to town so we picked the Golden Eagle Campground in the southwest area of the city near Ft. Carson You see, when you have a new trailer there are always little things that can go wrong (usually with the water connections) so we wanted to be close by just in case.
Miss Maisy got to come along on her first camping trip. She's prone to car sickness so neither of us will hold her. She does quite well in her little car seat.
The first order of business after getting the trailer set up was to explore the dog walking area.
It was a really large area with lots of trees and other vegetation. We've had so much rain this summer that even the yuccas look fantastic. It's been years since I've seen them bloom around here.
The rain let up long enough for us to build a campfire and cook our dinner over the flames. There's nothing better than a campfire.
On day 2 we were able to go out and explore one of the trails in-between rain showers.
More yuccas.
We came to an overlook of Ft. Carson to the east.
Even the cacti had beautiful blooms.
Before long we finally reached the end of the trail. We've been looking for the end of the trail for years.
Beautiful shot of the mountains. And wouldn't you know it, the thunder started rolling and the skies became very ominous. The hike down the mountain was way faster than the hike up. We've been caught on a mountain top in the lightning before and we didn't want to relive that experience.
Our one and only wildlife sighting.
After the rain I talked Irv into another fire although he was reluctant. He tried to tell me everything was too wet, but....I had high hopes.
We played a little corn hole while waiting for the fire to start. Irv beats me at everything. I even made him throw with his left hand and he still won. After a while we gave up on the fire and I gave up on trying to win a game.
It was a little chilly the next morning, but no worries...we just turned on the fireplace to warm things up. Maisy liked that.
There's always a good breakfast when you're camping.
Then we were off to explore the last trail before packing up and heading home.
It was ten miles out and back, but since Maisy was with us we only did about 2.5 miles. (Thank you Maisy for only having six inch legs!)
More yucca.
Water stop at our turn around point. It was up to 65 degrees so us Coloradans had to cool down.
We passed a really cool old truck on the way down. I'd really like to know the history of this campground. It had dozens of abandoned campsites and bath houses. I have a feeling that back in the day this was quite a place.
Upon returning Maisy was exhausted.
With the owner's permission, Irv got to fly his drone a little bit and take some footage of the campground.
Then it was time to pack up and head back to the real world.
It was a fun weekend and I'd definitely go back to this campground. Now the next thing we need to do is name the new trailer. Have any good ideas? If so, leave me a comment please.
