Surrealism -

I've just finished a new painting--one that is unlike anything else I've ever done.

Let me start by giving a definition of surrealism that I found on britannica.com:

"Surrealism was a means of reuniting conscious and unconscious realms of experience so completely that the world of dream and fantasy would be joined to the everyday rational world in “an absolute reality, a surreality."

When you think of surrealist art you probably think of artists such as Dali and Picasso.  Someone close to me wanted a piece of art for her house that was outside the box.  So I put on my thinking cap to come up with an idea for a piece of art that would be unique and personal to her.

This is what I came up with.  This person is a unique thinker who finds happiness in her garden, with her hummingbirds, with her friends and through the many books she reads.

This was my first attempt at painting a human.  It definitely isn't meant to be a realistic portrait of this woman, she specifically asked that it not include any wrinkles or other imperfections.  Instead it is merely her representation.

Her long dark hair is also the soil and roots where her beloved flowers are planted representing a connection between the earth and humanity.  She thrives on what grows in the earth and the hummingbird lives from the nectar of the flowers.  The books provide wisdom and knowledge and an escape from the everyday world.

The name of this artwork is Interconnected.

My very realistic art teacher would probably cringe if she knew what my latest masterpiece is.    It's hard to get a good shot of artwork without the proper lighting.  My photos don't  reflect how nicely this painting turned out.  I'm not mentioning the subjects name in case she doesn't think it looks anything like herself.  When I give it to her she's free to throw it in the closet never to see the light of day again.

So now I'm back to painting what I really love...the life and beauty of the Yellowstone area starting with one of the baby ravens that my coworkers and I came to love this summer.

Happy Tuesday!
