Hiking with Atticus

Have you ever had a friend who you only see maybe once a year, but when you're together it's like no time at all has gone by?  My friend, Scott, and I first met each other 21 years ago when we worked at YL.  Since then both our paths have changed, he moved to Denver, but we still manage to get together once a year.  Usually we meet at the National Western Stock Show in January, but this year that wasn't possible due to Covid.

This year we met at a park about halfway between Denver and Colorado Springs.  We brought lunch along and ate outside.  Although we are all vaccinated, we still choose to be careful.

After lunch we hit the nearest trail and just began walking and talking without really paying attention to where we were going.  Before long we came to a dead end where they're building a new subdivision next to the park.  Luckily, a trail map was posted nearby so we were able to figure out how to get back with the assistance of some mountain bikers.

Irv and Scott talked Star Wars, Avengers, and Mandalorian and all those other TV shows that I have no interest in.

Scott has a new dog, his first dog ever.  During quarantine he thought it would be a good time to adopt a dog, but it was nearly impossible to find a rescue dog in Colorado.  Somehow he got connected with a rescue that was brings dogs up from Texas.

He picked out his dog from a photo and was told to meet the van at a local pet store.  He named him Atticus which if you know Scott, you wouldn't have expected anything else. Atticus was found living in a trash dump near San Antonio.

Atticus is the sweetest, most loving dog ever.  He loves his person and anyone else he meets.  I always think it's amazing how forgiving dogs are.  Scott has him in obedience classes and Atticus is doing great.  The two of them are the perfect pair.

Walking about three miles and talking with a great friend non-stop.  Life doesn't get much better than this.

This is the first friend I've seen since the pandemic began.  It made me realize how much I've missed the outside world this past year.  There is hope on the horizon!  Get your damn vaccine, people!

Yep, its been a long slog through covid. Just recently I participated in three outdoor volunteer events and felt almost giddy after each one. And I am not a giddy feeling guy.
