Camping at Farish Rec Area

All hell broke loose since our last camping trip of the season and I never had a chance to blog about it.  So here it goes.

The last weekend in September we had reservations at Farish Rec Area up near Woodland Park.  It's a rec area run by the Air Force.  They only have three RV spots, but they have many cabins and lodges for rent.

We arrived on Friday evening after work and it was really windy and cold.  Although we like to cook over the campfire when we're camping, we ended up cooking our brats in the trailer kitchen.  Oh, it's so hard to rough it!

On Saturday we enjoyed sleeping in because our trailer is climate controlled--we just set the thermostat and it maintains a constant temperature--more roughing it.  We bundled up and went for a couple hikes. Farish has a sledding run so we decided to hike down it and go exploring.

Once again, this is my usual view when hiking.  I stop to take pictures and "smell the roses" along the way so Irv is always in front, but he's always patient.

The aspens were in their fall glory.  We found out that little Maisy is quite the hiker.

She even likes climbing on the big boulders.

One of the many good things about camping in the Rockies are the rock formations.  Notice the aspen tree on the right has grown around the rock.

Farish has three small lakes.  We were going to rent paddle boats and go for a spin, but we decided it was too cold.

After lunch we headed out on a 2.5 mile hike on the Peak View Trail.  Notice the bear spray on Irv's hip...when the trails are quiet this time of year we try to always be prepared.  We passed only five people during the entire hike.

I love this grass meadow that looks straight through to Pikes Peak.

Here's a better view of the Peak.

Someone had built this little shelter.  I'm a big fan of the show "Alone".  I thought some of those contestants could have learned something about how to build a proper shelter from this example.  Part of Farish had a huge group of boy scouts camping.  Maybe this was one of their projects?

Is there anything more beautiful that this?

We were famished when we got back to camp so it was time to cook dinner.

We were determined to cook over the campfire our last night there so we bundled up.  Above is our salmon, red potato, onion, and corn on the cob foil dinner ready to go on the grill.

Because it was still somewhat windy we did not make a roaring fire, it was just big enough to cook our dinner.

I had a bottle or two of my favorite Shock Top Apple Harvest Ale.  It was so delicious!  Little did I know that this would be my last taste of alcohol for at least a year (blood thinners and alcohol aren't a good combination if you're smart).

Is there anything better than hanging out at a campfire?

Poor little Maisy doesn't have a very thick coat so she required a lot of cuddling or...

wrapped in her blanket.

She also likes sitting on the table and watching out the window.  She kept us safe from all kinds of dogs and chipmunks who were lurking outside.

So our camping season is done.  It was a really fun last weekend and we got packed up early on Sunday morning so we could be back home to watch the Chiefs play at 11:00.

Can't wait until next year!

In the summer we camp a lot using a tent on our barge. We use it to get to remote logging roads with our quads and then use the deck for our tent. At a logging dock or barge ramp we are less likely to encounter nosy bears or other critter (except mice). We have to lock up our food in the cab to keep them away. - Margy

What a great trip. I love the fall color and the mountains and everything. I'm glad you got to use your trailer at least a couple of times this year. Maisy looks like a great camp dog.
