Skywatch Friday: Drilling

I'm sharing some simple shots from around my house this week.  Nothing too exciting. 


Last Friday afternoon I was painting in my studio when I heard a lot of rumbling trucks heading into the property across the street.  This 40 acre parcel was sold last year and we knew some folks were planning to build a house at some point this year, apparently the time is getting close.


This parcel of land is very odd.  An easement road had to be built through two adjoining properties to reach their 40 acres.  Out here in the wild west there are occasionally disputes over easement roads, some have lead to shootings when the property owners block it off.  I hope everyone gets along.

Anyway, on Monday morning they started drilling and by this afternoon they packed up and left.  Seems pretty quick.  Our well is 600 ft. in depth, I wonder how deep they had to go for theirs.


Other views from our yard is my front "English" flower garden.  A few years ago I planted milkweed to attract the pollinators.  It may have been a mistake to plant something with "weed" in its name because now they're spreading everywhere.  At least the bees and butterflies will be happy.


I also planted some out by my She Shed in an area that never gets watered and they've done surprisingly well.  Again, they are spreading everywhere.  I think they're so pretty.


Years ago in my backyard I planted a few hollyhock seeds that my MIL gave me.  Every year they get bigger and bigger and are now taller than the house and run the length of the house.  I absolutely love them and so do the pollinators.

...we have a 550 foot well that was drilled through solid granite. It provides us with "prehistoric water!" I love pollinators, but the milkweed in our garden is taking over. It would be nice if the hollyhocks would do the same. I wish you an Awesome August.

Yep, easement roads can be troublesome if somebody decides to not play nice. My experience in Texas when I dealt with such things is that law enforcement did not want to get involved at all with civil matters.
I love your milkweek. At the pollinator events I chair we tell people to put milkweed in containers, or it will take over your garden.
We don't have hollyhocks here. I loved seeing them in our recent trip to New Mexico and Colorado.

Skywatch Friday: Yellowstone Memories

Today I go to the archives for my Skywatch Friday post.  For the first time in many years I'm not going back to work in Yellowstone National Park (YELL) as a season ranger.  I thought I'd share some of my favorite spots. This is the Grand Prismatic Spring.  Beautiful multi-colored hot spring that is the largest in YELL.  As a ranger I've seen tourons walk and even ride their bikes across this area.  (The stories I could tell.) There's an overlook you can hike up to to get this stunning view. This is the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River. One summer I hiked up to the top of Mt. Washburn.  Stunning views from up there too. Here I am in my ranger uniform ready to great visitors. The best sunset in the park (in my opinion) is at Lake Yellowstone. Am I missing this magical place this season?  You bet I am, especially my co-workers. Linking with Skywatch Friday!

Skywatch Friday: Cheyenne Mountain State Park

We took the new camper for a quick weekend trip last week. Beautiful skies here in Southern Colorado. A view of Pikes Peak from one of the trails. This beautiful wildflower is apparently a Blazing Star or Liatris Punctata. We were able to get out and enjoy the trails. Our dog, Aspen, is the world's happiest rock climber.  Any boulder we come across she has to jump on. iNat Classic tells me this is a Great Mullein.  Can't wait to see what it's bloom looks like. Maisy, the little dog, got a little tired at the end of our two mile adventure. Me in the midst of a scrub oak tunnel.  Any shade was appreciated. I told you Maisy was exhausted after our hike. This beauty was the only wildlife we encountered. There's nothing better than a campfire at night to go along with some star gazing. There's no better way to recharge than spending a couple days in nature. Linking with Skywatch Friday.
