Skywatch Friday: Praying Hands

Image
I have been in Tulsa, Oklahoma for a few days and I decided to go see the "Praying Hands", a bronze sculpture located at the entrance to Oral Roberts University.  (I did not realize that ORU was still an active university.) I've read that the hands are the largest praying hands sculpture in the world standing 60 feet high and weighing 30 tons. The hands were originally located outside the City of Faith Medical and Research Center and were moved to their current location in 1991 after the hospital closed. Years ago my hubbie and I visited the hands with my brother.  I do recall there was a geocache under this electrical box behind the sculpture.  No, I did not look to see if it was still there. These three towers  near the hands are Robert's former hospital.  The complex is now called the CityPlex Towers and is occupied by several businesses and a few medical facilities.  Oral Roberts had a vision to build the complex in 1977 and it opened in 1980.  Unf...

Skywatch Friday: A storm is coming

Storm clouds brewing over the high plains of Southern Colorado last week. We've had a lot of cold and snow this month.  I'm ready for spring! Linking with Skywatch Friday

Celebration and Grief

Image
My favorite grandson, formerly known as Mr. Beans, is home from his training at Fort Sill, OK.  (He's now formally known as SPC Beans.) His training concluded on Wednesday morning and he immediately jumped in the car headed towards home.  Of course we had to go celebrate his accomplishments! We chose to go to a local distillery.  I'm not much of a whiskey type gal, but I do think these bottles are beautifully lined up. Then we went up to the third floor and they have a platform overlooking the barrel aging room (that's what I call it anyway).  Hundreds of barrels of whiskey.  Apparently this distillery sells a lot of whiskey to Canada, but that's going to change obviously.  President Musk and FLOTUS Trump have no idea how bad they're hurting this country, the worst of it may not be visible for months. The distillery is in a commercial area.  Their third floor balcony has an amazing view of Pikes Peak.  (I should have ventured outside to get a bett...

Skywatch Friday: A Dreary Day

Image
It's been a cold and snowy January and February.  We had a few days of the False Spring , but then winter decided to make another appearance. It is beautiful and I'm lucky to be retired so that I can just stay home, but I'm ready for spring! In Colorado we have more than four seasons: WINTER :  December through January FALSE SPRING :  Beginning to mid-February SECOND WINTER :  Late February through early March MUD SEASON:   All of April ACTUAL SPRING :  May through early June SUMMER :  Mid June to late July FALSE FALL :  Beginning to mid August SECOND SUMMER :  Late August to early September ACTUAL FALL :  Mid September to mid October EARLY WINTER :  Late October through November Linking with Skywatch Friday!

I Am Someone!

January 20th seems like an eternity ago and also like just a minute ago. This is how Aspen handles the daily news and I have to admit I'd like to do the same.  President Musk and First Lady DJT are getting to me. This is going to be an op-ed rather than a pictural blog post.  Skip it if you'd like. The removal of DEI protections has me questioning my own value.  One of his appointees said that only white men should be in charge and that women have been coddled for too long.  High ranking women are being dismissed for not agreeing with a dictator want-to-be. For 45 years I had someone tell me what a terrible mother I was because I chose to have a career rather than staying home with my girls.  Even when I worked in Yellowstone I was told to stay home and take care of my husband.  Now, if I'd been a man I would have been applauded for starting at ground level, earning two degrees and finishing my career as a VP of a billion dollar company with the six f...

Skywatch Friday: Praying Hands

Image
I'm in Tulsa, Oklahoma for a few days and decided to go visit the world's largest praying hands sculpture.  It's named "Praying Hands", it was originally named "Healing Hands". The hands are located at the entrance to Oral Roberts University. According to Travel Oklahoma they are also the world's largest bronze statue at 60 feet tall and weighing 30 tons.  I think they're quite beautiful. My hubbie and I visited the hands many years ago with my brother and there used to be a geocache located under this electric box.  No, I did not look to see if it's still there. Nearby are the CityPlex Towers which were previously the City of Faith Medical and Research Center envisioned by Oral Roberts in 1977.  The hands used to be located at the entrance to the hospital.  The hospital opened in 1981 and after years of losing money and rising debt, it closed in 1989.  The hands were moved from the entrance of the hospital to its current location in 1991.  T...
