Skywatch Friday: Wild Horses!

Image
The Salt River wild horses have been eluding us since we arrived in Arizona several weeks ago so today we went in search of them again. This time we started at the Coon Bluff Recreation Area.  First we went one way down the river, but soon had to turn back because we didn't bring any rock climbing gear. Then we turned around and went the other direction. The water in the river was crystal clear, but no sign of fish or horses. There are times when I really miss my dad especially when I want to know what kind of tree I'm looking at.  This one has something that resembles Spanish moss hanging down.  What is it? This riparian area that surrounds the river has all kinds of wildlife.  Today we saw theses white egrets. This gray heron was also hanging out in the distance. We met a guy carrying all kinds of photographic equipment and he said we needed to go about a quarter of a mile further down the river to find a spot where the horses cross every afternoon around 5:0...

Skywatch Friday: Superstition

Last week we ventured to the Lost Dutchman State Park near Apache Junction, Arizona. I had seen this large rock mountain looming in the distance east of Phoenix and wanted to go check it out up close and personal. The plan was to go on an easy 2.5 mile hike with very little elevation gain. Then my hubby saw this sign for the Treasure Loop which led up to the base of the mountain so off we went to explore. I apologize in advance for having so many shots of the same mountain, but it is more impressive in person than my pics are portraying. My photos are quite washed out because of the afternoon sun. Lots of interesting rock formations along the way. So then I got to wondering why it was called the Lost Dutchman.  The legend is that there used to be a gold mine in the area. The gold mine was run by a Mexican family in the 1840s.  In 1848 they tried to return to Mexico with their gold, but they were ambushed and all but two were killed by the Apaches. In the 1870s Jacob Walt...

Skywatch Friday: Cat's Peak

Image
We had to go into isolation this week.  We're living in a 35' fifth wheel for a few months while we winter in Arizona.  What to do when you need to isolate for 10 days, but still need some exercise? We decided to hit a trail at Usery Mountain Regional Park in Maricopa County. Every time I visit the desert I grow more in love with it! Cat's Peak was our chosen destination. The rocky terrain mixed with saguaros is magical. I believe that's Usery Mountain in the distance.  Amazing how it dominates the landscape. We're both doing great and are enjoying some much needed sunshine and fresh air while not encountering another human being.  Three miles can really lift one's spirits. Happy Skywatch Friday!
