State Fair Time
Last weekend Irv and I ventured down to Pueblo with Jillian. As president of our county's 4-H Horse Advisory Committee she had the duty of taking pizza to our county's kids who were showing their horses at the fair--both of them. Yes, only two kids from our county were participating in the horse show which is almost unbelievable.
After dropping off the pizza we decided to walk around a little bit and take a look at the animals. Have I mentioned yet that it was HOT? Very hot, at least for us Colorado folks.
The cows were trying to keep cool.
The sheep were all dressed up and ready for their show.
This one was begging for me to take him home. Irv said no, he always says no.
There were all varieties of chickens.
I even found a cranky old goose.
And then there were the bunnies. So cute! Some of them were even for sale. Irv said no.
They were making a butter sculpture. It looks nice and cool in there.
Of course there was every type of fried food available. This particular place could fry just about anything.
There's a big controversy at the fair this year. All the food vendors, rides, and games aren't allowed to accept cash. Instead, you have to purchase a cash card. It's easy to buy the card, but a hassle to get a refund if you don't use it all.
We didn't buy a thing except drinks from the Loaf and Jug which has a store set up on the fair grounds. I have to think these cash cards are really affecting business.
While in the Loaf and Jug we decided to play the lottery and bought three scratch tickets. Jillian was the big winner--$12.
Here's the sand sculpture which is always one of my favorites. Although Jillian and I thought it looks pretty much the same as last year's.
We ended by watching some of the horse show. 4-H reining can be very painful to watch, but some of them did quite well. The size of the show is so small compared to what it used to be. It makes me kind of sad to see how 4-H is diminishing in the state. One year when Jillian was showing at state fair, she was in this very arena at 10:30 at night trying to finish up her last two classes for the day. She was crying, I'm pretty sure Doc was crying, it was cold and rainy and I was trying to keep them both encouraged. Awww...great memories.

Too bad the fair appears to be in decline. Tulsa's State Fair is in a couple weeks, it is still well attended.
